New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is busy getting to work in strengthening his new squad with talks ongoing for several additions to Old Trafford this summer
The summer transfer window is finally open, and business can officially get underway for Premier League teams.
While deals involving clubs abroad cannot be registered until July, new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will be busy putting in plans to strengthen his squad. The Dutchman is planning to embark on his first pre-season at the club and evaluate his team at first-hand.
United are hopeful of bolstering their squad over the summer months after having their ranks diminished by a series of players departing at the end of their contracts. Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant have all left Old Trafford.
Here is Saturday’s round-up of the latest Manchester United transfer news from Mirror Football
Antony talks advancing
Ajax forward Antony is a leading target for Ten Hag who is keen to reunite with the 22-year-old – Ajax’s star player last season. United are in pole position to land the Brazilian given his strong relationship with the Red Devils boss at the Amsterdam Arena while the player’s representatives have travelled to Europe in order to discuss a possible transfer this summer.
Antony played 33 games last season for the Dutch giants, where he scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists before missing the final segment of the campaign through injury. He was an instrumental player for Ten Hag’s side and the boss believes he fits the profile of what is missing in the current squad of players that he is inheriting at Old Trafford.
Contact for Asensio
Manchester United have made contact with Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio and spoken to his agent Jorge Mendes.
That is according to El Mundo Deportivo, who claim that a deal is possible this summer. Asensio is aged 26 and in what are theoretically the prime years of his career. Yet he started just half of the club’s 38 La Liga matches last season and just twice in the Champions League, while he did not feature at all in the final. Earlier this season, he admitted that he was less than happy with his lack of continuity at the club.
Asensio has said: “I have one year left on my contract and I have three possibilities, after the international break we will talk.” The three future options to which he refers are the following: renew his contract, stay at Real Madrid until the summer of 2023 and then leave for free at the end of the contract or seek an exit this summer for a fee.
Asensio was somewhat of a young prodigy at Madrid and he bagged double figures in his first two full seasons with the club between 2016 and 2018. He suffered a dip in form the following campaign before suffering a LCL knee ligament injury in summer 2019 – which ruled him out of action for a year.
Manchester United have made an approach to sign midfielder Ruben Neves. That is according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo , as cited by Sport Witness.
Wolves have already sources the replacement for Neves in the form of Sporting Lisbon’s 26-year-old Joao Palhinha and are now hopeful of a bidding war for their midfielder to ramp up his sale value. The same report adds that despite Barcelona interest in the player, United’s proposal is more attractive to them.
Of course, United have been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong – with the area clearly an area of urgent investment due to the exits of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic this summer.
