Phoebe Bridgers Shared Her Abortion Story on Social Media

After a Supreme Court draft opinion leaked on Monday night, indicating Roe v. Wade will very likely be overturned this summer, many are sharing their abortion stories online to underscore how common and necessary abortion is. Among those rallying for abortion rights by opening up about their own experience is musician Phoebe Bridgers.

In a tweet and Instagram story on May 3, the day after the draft opinion was leaked, Bridgers said she had an abortion last October.

“I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour,” Bridgers tweeted. “I went to planned parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access. Here’s a big list of places you can donate to right now.” She shared a link to The Cut‘s list of abortion funds.

Abortion pills are a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol that can safely and effectively end a pregnancy within about the first 77 days. The pills work together to block progesterone and cause the shedding of the uterine lining, ending a pregnancy. After taking abortion pills, people experience cramping and bleeding, which Planned Parenthood describes as similar to early miscarriage.

Once bleeding starts, Planned Parenthood notes that most people pass the pregnancy in four to five hours, though it may take longer. As many advocates and experts have pointed out, these medications are safe to use at home — and some are calling on lawmakers to decriminalize self-managed medication abortion.

On social media, many are lauding Bridgers for opening up about her abortion.

“thank u to phoebe bridgers for sharing her abortion story. this kind of transparency helps,” one user wrote.
