Kim Kardashian shed 16lbs for Met Gala gown and admits she ‘was so strict’

Kim Kardashian has revealed she shed 16 pounds in order to fit into the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress for the 2022 Met Gala.

The 41 year old put on a show-stopping display as she arrived hand-in-hand at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York with her Saturday Night Live boyfriend Pete Davidson, 28.

And while their developing romance is the talk of the town, on 2 May it was her £3.8million gown that took centre stage as it’s the very same dress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing “Happy Birthday” to president John F. Kennedy back in 1962.

Kim has spoken out on her dress choice, which has been kept under lock and key at Riplet’s Believe It Or Not! museum.

The gown could not be altered at all, which meant she had to undergo a transformation herself in order to fit into the stunning floor-length number.

Speaking before the star-studded event, she shared: “The dress was transported by guards and I had to wear gloves to try it on.”

The reality star, whose boyfriend recently appeared to unveil a new tattoo dedicated to her and her kids, continued: “I always thought she was extremely curvy. I imagined I might be smaller in some places where she was bigger and bigger in places where she was smaller.

“So when it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be altered at all.”

Kim didn’t just give up and find another dress to wear though. Instead, she took on the task of losing weight to wear it.

“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein,” she shared of her diet.

She added: “I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.”

A month after she took on this diet and routine, she went back to Orlando for the final fitting and told Vogue that she “wanted to cry tears of joy” when it fit.

Kim also opened up on her look on the red carpet with her friend Lala as she shared: “This is Marilyn Monroe’s dress it’s 60 years old. She wore this when she sang happy birthday to John F. Kennedy in 1962.”

She continued: “I tried it on and it didn’t fit me. I had to lose 16 pounds to be able to fit this. It was such a challenge it was like a role.

“I don’t think they believed that I was going to do it but I did it.”

The nude skin tight column gown was covered in rhinestones, with a newly bleached blonde Kim emulating Marilyn’s famous white fur dropping moment by finishing her look with a white fur shawl draped sexily behind her.

This dress was originally inspired by a Bob Mackie sketch for costume designer Jean-Louis, and was first worn at Madison Square Gardens in front of an audience of 15,000.

It has been on display by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Orlando since the museum bought it at auction in 2016.
