Why Fans Think Kim Kardashian Will Wear This Iconic Marilyn Monroe Dress to the Met Gala

Some sleuths on the internet think they have Kim Kardashian’s look for the 2022 Met Gala, happing Monday, May 2, all figured out. (Sometimes there are rewards for being too online!)

After studying the vague hints Kardashian has been dropping about her Met Gala look and analyzing her whereabouts, people on Reddit have deduced that the reality star and SKIMS co-founder will attend the exclusive event in a historic gown originally worn by Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe: the sparkly, nude, form-fitting, and absolutely iconic gown that Monroe wore on May 19, 1962 for a celebration of President John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Kim told Access Hollywood at the April premiere of Hulu’s The Kardashians that the dress she plans to wear to the Met cannot be altered or tailored in any way, which may indicate that it’s archived vintage, like the Monroe dress. The gown also fits Kardashian’s aesthetic, so the theory makes sense—although, whether or not it makes sense for the Met Gala’s “Gilded Glamour” theme is debatable, since the Gilded Age was from roughly 1870-1900.

Fans have used Kardashian’s location over the past few weeks to come to their conclusion. Kim Kardashian and boyfriend Pete Davidson were spotted at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum in Orlando, Florida on April 23. According to The Sun, they spent three hours there. To the average person, this seems normal. But!—the gown is on display at the museum, so fans think Kim and Pete visited to check it out and possibly try it on. Ripley’s purchased the dress, designed by Jean Louis, according to People, for nearly $5 million in 2016, making it the world’s most-expensive dress.

Marilyn Monroe wore the gown for JFK’s birthday in 1962.
