The Balmuda Toaster Oven Makes the Crispy Bagels of My Dreams


Ever since moving into my first solo apartment, I’ve stocked up on home and kitchen appliances like it was my job. My home aesthetic is extremely important to me, and finding both functional and cute gadgets isn’t always the easiest task. A toaster was a top priority. I had put off buying one in the earlier months of my move, but once I settled in, I missed my morning avocado toast and weekend bagels. That’s when I discovered the Balmuda toaster—an innovative toaster oven that uses steam to heat up food to crispy perfection—after seeing it all over my FYP. 

The Japanese toaster, which has been around since 2003 but launched in the U.S. only in 2020, quickly became a TikTok phenomenon: Views for the brand are up to more than 3 million at this point, with users raving about its unique steam technology. Famous food TikToker Emily Mariko helped put the device on people’s radars. She has more than 10 million followers, uses the toaster almost daily, and basically convinced others to add it to their own kitchens. (It’s not called the “Emily Mariko toaster” for nothing on TikTok.)

The toaster oven uses moisture and high heat to crisp bread on the outside, while preserving the aroma and texture on the inside. It retails for about $329 and comes in four colors (taupe, white, black, and gray). It’s about 14.1 inches wide, 8.2 inches tall, and weighs a little over 10 pounds—not exactly compact if you’re short on counter space, but you can always keep it in a nearby cupboard. The heat settings range from 350°F to 450°F, with a timer that goes up to 15 minutes.

Unlike a regular toaster or toaster oven, though, the Balmuda Toaster comes with a teeny-tiny measuring cup that fits exactly five milliliters of water (pro tip: Use filtered water), which you pour into a small slot before turning on the timer. Why add water, you ask? The point of the toaster oven is to create a “bread sauna” that locks in moisture, giving you a golden crispy layer and perfect crunch with every bite. According to the brand’s science, bread starts to “fluff” at 140°F, then, at 320°F, bread starts to get that gorgeous golden color, and it browns at around 428°F.
