Taylor Swift Debuts New Song “Carolina” In “Where the Crawdads Sing” Trailer

Taylor Swift is back!

On Tuesday, March 22, Swifties got their first peek at a new single from the superstar singer. The traditional Swiftie sleuthing isn’t required to hear the new material, but you will have to watch the trailer for the upcoming film, Where the Crawdads Sing. The film adaptation of the 2018 novel is set to hit theaters this July, and Taylor provided an exclusive original song for the film, called “Carolina.”

Sharing news of her involvement on Instagram, Taylor wrote, “Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago. As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side.”

Written by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing made frequent appearances on The New York Times best-seller list. The film will bring to life the story of Kya (Edgar-Jones), “an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina.” The synopsis further reads: “For years, rumors of the ‘Marsh Girl’ haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.”

According to Taylor, she wrote “Carolina” herself and turned to frequent collaborator Aaron Dessner to help produce it. “I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story,” she explained in her Insta caption. Only a snippet is included in the trailer, but Taylor promised that fans would be able to hear the full track soon.

“Carolina” arrives as Taylor presumably continues work on re-recording her old music. A decision spurred by Scooter Braun’s current ownership of her masters, Taylor announced back in November 2020 that she intended to re-record many of her most famous records. She’s already completed work on Red and Fearless, and fans are definitely hopeful to hear more of Taylor’s Versions soon.
