Club eye Wolves man to replace departing star – Have major ‘advantage’, nearly joined in 2019

Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back Nelson Semedo is a potential option for Atlético Madrid as they look to replace Kieran Trippier.

The England full-back is close to completing a move to Newcastle United, with Diego Simeone confirming today that they have given him 48 hours to finalise the deal.

That will leave Atlético with a hole to fill at right-back, and several options have been named in the last few weeks.

Semedo can be added to the list, with Marca reporting that the Wolves man is an old target that they might look at once more.

The Portuguese defender was ‘close’ to joining Atlético in 2019 when Barcelona were happy to sell, but the Catalan giants changed their mind and eventually sold him to Wolves in September 2020 instead.

The player was put forward as an option by Simeone, but eventually, they signed Trippier, and Semedo headed to England.

The interest remains, though, and they could now turn to Semedo to replace the man who they signed instead of him.

The ‘main stumbling block’ is his price, with Wolves paying €32m to sign him from Barcelona and likely to try and recoup as much of that as possible.

They do have one ‘advantage’ however, in that Semedo is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, whose ‘excellent’ relationship with Atlético chief Gil Marín could ‘help to find a formula’ such as a loan, to take him to the Spanish club.

There is no indication from the newspaper that talks have been held or anything of that nature, but Semedo is an option once Trippier’s exit has been finalised.
