Euphoria stans, our time has come — a Euphoria season 2 release date is here.
After a long hiatus, season 2 of the show will premiere on January 9, 2022 on HBO. Zendaya shared the news with a trailer on November 23, writing in all caps: “EUPHORIA SEASON 2. JANUARY 9.” The trailer begins with Zendaya’s Rue rolling around on a bed, singing and dancing to Frank Sinatra’s “Call Me Irresponsible.” The sequence then transitions to the darker tone the show is known for.
“When you’re younger, everything feels so permanent, but as you get older, you begin to realize nothing is,” Rue says in a voiceover. “And everyone you love can drift away.” Flashes of house parties, birthday parties, joyrides, police chases, and suspicious Jacob Elordi facial expressions abound. We even catch a glimpse of some new characters, including one played by Dominic Fike. Plus, Maddy (Alexa Demie) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) get up to plenty of slow motion dancing.
When we left off at the end of season one, Rue appeared to relapse after she and Jules (Hunter Schafer) parted ways. Kat (Barbie Ferreira) had a romantic moment with Ethan set to BTS member Jungkook’s “Euphoria,” while Cassie had an abortion. Nate (Jacob Elordi) fought with his dad Cal while also questioning his and Maddy’s clearly toxic relationship. In short, there’s a lot of different directions Euphoria season 2 could take, and we’re excited to see what Sam Levinson and the cast came up with.
Zendaya had previously told pop culture writer Stitch for Teen Vogue that it was a “difficult” season. “It’s a challenging season,” Z revealed. “It’s gonna be hard and it’s gonna be devastating sometimes, but I think Rue really deserves all of that care when it comes to her character, because I think she represents a lot for so many people. And I hope to make those people proud with our depictions of Rue [and] where all the characters go. I think this season’s not going to be easy, though. It’s not going to be a fun watch, I don’t think.”
